The Screams
Welcome to The Screams, a poem I recently wrote. Read along down below for my interpretation of ‘poetry’ in general. Happy reading!
When I tell people I write poetry, I get different deliveries of the same sentiment. And that consensus is that many people ‘don’t understand’ poetry. But the thing is I think that’s the point of it. And I know, many people know that, but I think it’s really that simple. There isn’t some secret that non-poets or non-poem readers aren’t privy to. There’s about a million different forms, cadences, and preferences you can follow. I mostly write in free verse.
I don’t know, I think one of my favorite things about poetry is throwing out all of the rules. It can be fun to limit yourself and see what you create with boundaries too, but there’s something about untapped creative freedom that I love. I just think that if anyone tells you your poem isn’t right or it’s not enough of this or that- those kinds of people shouldn’t be reading it. I write it mostly for myself but I think it can be really rewarding to allow yourself to be vulnerable and share things with others too.
So I guess all of that is to say- who gives a damn what it means, as long as it’s meaningful to you. That’s what I’ll leave you with! Please leave a comment below about what you think of The Screams and what words/vibes pop out at you. Thank you!
The Screams
I’m sitting passenger
He’s eating a ketchup burrito
We havent talked in four hours
The music drowns out the quiet
I lull myself to sleep
It’s dark when I wake
he’s glaring at me
The silence is deafening
But what’s there to say?
we’re caught in some trance
eye to eye, breathe to breathe
who will break first, who will finally speak
I’m watching his knuckles stear
the car jolts diagonally right
someone just hit us, and we’re falling off the side
of the road his eyes weren’t on
and I blame as we drop
he screams and says he loves me
But I’m stunned so I just nod
