The Latest on Stuytown’s “Bread Story”

Cafes in NYC

It’s pretty hard to live in New York and not become a chronic cafe-er. I have a few friends who choose not to consume caffeine, but even they frequent various gourmet cafes around the city. The thing is, cafe owners KNOW that they have us in their grip–that their product is in high demand. However, they also have realized that the market for cafes is somewhat overpopulated in New York (I had to force myself to say that because I really don’t want to dissuade anyone from opening up a new delectable spot)! Basically, how do they stand out from the rest, especially when there’s so many?

Bread Story / Cafe Vibes

Bread Story is a cafe that has been around at least since I’ve lived here–which is somehow already a year and a half. Upon checking their website, I can find posts from as far back as 2021 (so at least 4 years). While that might not seem like long, in New York time, it’s substantial enough. Many establishments close their doors within their first year of opening.

So, I’ve walked past this place many times before, mainly on my way to my dentist’s office on 23rd. It’s in Stuytown off 1st ave, in an area that’s extremely walkable. Funnily enough, it’s right next to a Dunkin Donuts. Personally, I wouldn’t say the area is very darling or necessarily “cafe vibes” (if you get what I mean). But as the saying goes, don’t judge a book by its cover!

Prices / Value

Something I noticed that Bread Story does to set itself apart, is offer pretty competitive prices and deals. For example, all day long you can get a cappuccino and a croissant for 6 dollars! That’s pretty unheard of in Manhattan–usually the cappuccino alone costs more than that.

Bread Story sells freshly baked breads, pastries, sandwiches, coffee, macarons, and more. Personally, I feel like this is a tried and true cafe that will provide what you need. A coffee and a croissant in the morning on the way to work, a few macarons on the way home, a fresh loaf of bread for your dinner party later tonight–it’s a good place to have in the neighborhood. That being said, is there anything that makes it unique besides the pricing? I’m not sure. Other cafe’s have their specialties that draw in tourists and locals, I guess Bread Story’s is their bread assortment?

All in all, here’s a solid cafe that I’d visit again with a rating of 7.5/10!
